Saint Mary’s Rugby and Bay Alarm: Turning Top Talent into the Next Generation of Sales Performers
This Saturday, May 4th, the St. Mary’s College (SMC) Men’s Rugby team will face Navy during the Men’s Division 1A Collegiate Rugby National Championships in Houston, Texas. The Gaels are no strangers to the national championship stage—this game will be their seventh national championship appearance in the last eleven years.
On the sidelines of the Sabercats Stadium will be Bay Alarm’s very own Enterprise Sales Manager and SMC Rugby Assistant Coach, Andrew Cook. When Cook is not driving growth for Bay Alarm’s Northern California Enterprise Sales team, he is coaching the team’s forwards in practice, creating attack plans during games, and scouting talent for future Bay Alarm employees.
Recruiting the best since 2007
Bay Alarm and St. Mary’s College have a long history. Not only did Tim Westphal, Bay Alarm’s CEO and third-generation family owner, receive his MBA from SMC, but we also have a strong representation of alumni in management and throughout our sales force.
This representation is no coincidence: Sixteen years ago, Bay Alarm started working with the Saint Mary’s College Career Center, providing mentorship to students interested in pursuing a career in business after graduation. Our Bay Area sales managers and recruiting professionals also routinely attend the on-campus career fairs held throughout the year to meet students of all concentrations and discuss opportunities.
The mentorship program’s success is largely thanks to Derek Holmberg, Bay Alarm’s Vice President of Sales and a former SMC rugger, who works directly with the team. To date, he has brought over 30 rugby recruits, including Andrew Cook, to Bay Alarm for mentorship and job opportunities. Holmberg says, “We love recruiting athletes like rugby players because they excel at goal attainment, which is crucial in the business world.”
Bay Alarm is pulling for the Gaels!
Bay Alarm is a big supporter of Saint Mary’s Rugby outside of hiring dozens of players. We proudly sponsor several events, including the annual Decades Fundraiser Golf Tournament and rugby tournaments abroad.
This year has been impressive for SMC Rugby, which finished the season undefeated against all college teams, including notable wins against Cal and BYU. Their hard work, dedication, and teamwork have paid off immensely, showcasing exceptional skills and determination on the field—and demonstrating the values behind why Bay Alarm hires directly from this program.
As a long-time champion for St. Mary’s, we are rooting for the Gaels to bring it home!
