Fire Safety Tips for Business

Fire is one of the top risks to any small business. According to the National Fire Prevention Association (NFPA) in 2016, there was a structure fire reported every 66 seconds with over 29% being caused by cooking equipment. Local safety codes dictate the minimum fire protection requirements for businesses to operate legally however, practicing smart fire safety is something all employees should know.

Essential Business Fire Prevention Tips

There are many factors when it comes to business fire prevention and maintenance. In order to protect yourself and your business, here are a few points to keep in mind:

  1. Maintain an organized workplace. Avoid clutter and keep all hallways, walkways, and doorways clear.
  2. Store oily rags in a fire retardant or metal container and make sure to dispose of them regularly and properly.
  3. Prevent overheating and friction sparks through regular machinery maintenance.
  4. Report any electrical hazards like faulty wiring and malfunctioning electrical equipment right away. Never attempt repairs yourself, unless you are a qualified professional.
  5. Keep access to all electrical panels free and clear. Material and equipment stored in front of them may hinder your ability to shut down power quickly in an emergency.
  6. Be familiar with the Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS). This will inform you on how to properly handle and store chemicals in any environment.
  7. Use precaution in potentially explosive atmospheres like ones containing flammable liquid vapors and fine particles.
  8. Never leave cooking food unattended.
  9. Keep appliances clean, free of crumbs, grease, and other food debris.
  10. Designate a smoking area at least 20 feet from the exterior of your building. Never smoke in storerooms or chemical storage areas.
